For example, there is an activity called Novel in an Hour, during which students have to read a section of a novel and present it to their classmates in a creative way. Therefore students would be able to split into groups and make a small video sharing each portion of the novel with their classmates.
This could be extremely useful for students who do not learn the traditional way. Some students may require a dramatic performance or an interactive visual to help make their learning concrete. Over the course of the video, the kids in the class utilized technology in numerous ways. First we saw them looking up blueprints of actual boats which was useful to the kids because they were able to begin their designs based on real boats. As they underwent the process of actually sailing the boats in the water, the kids video taped their trials and added a voice over to the clip in order to reflect on what materials they used, why the boat was the shape it was, and what they could improve for next time. Following the project, the kids posted their project on a blog where teachers and other members of the community could see what they did and what they learned. Over the course of the entire project, the students were interviewed on camera and asked questions about their boats to check for their understandings of the concepts.
The use of technology in this instance really allows us to see learning taking place. You see the kids begin the process of building the boats through research, then you see them actually constructing their boats, and then you see them floating (or not floating) which tells me that they have learned something about boats and how they float. During their voiceover/video, the students could clearly explain their projects thoroughly and discuss ways that they could improve their designs. I think that this process was extremely effective, you can clearly see the students learning and having fun while they are doing it. Therefore, the students are engaged and will remember the material when asked to replicate it on tests/quizzes for summative assessment. Technology could have been used to maybe research which materials float the best. There might be an app that you could make small boats and visually test them, allowing them to make blueprints and test multiple different ideas before finding the one that they want to explore further. This video was an incredible example of successful project-based learning. This is something that I want to try and do with my future students, maybe not the exact same ideas, but similar. The level of engagement from the students is incredible. Through this level of engagement, true learning can take place. It seemed as though all of the students had fun, were interested, and learned a lot from this project, all while touching on multiple different subject areas. Today we discussed ways in which we could use technology in the classroom for the purpose of learning. Something I took away was the vast amount of applications that are free to use to assist in students learning. Using some of those apps or websites has the ability to assist in student learning and enhance the quality of education for all of the students in my future classroom.

I believe that technology has a role to play in the education of students, teaching, and learning; and as we move closer into the future, technology will begin to play an even more vital role within education. It is important to teach with the tools that we are able to access today, with influxes of new technology surfacing constantly, the education system should look to take advantage of opportunities to make students familiar with and proficient in using new technology. These tools are designed to make life easier and more efficient, and using these tools we can create an environment that fosters more efficient learning. Students are also usually well adapted to using technology, so it may be beneficial to use mediums that they are familiar with to help them succeed throughout their schooling. Technology is supplying students with limitless opportunities to be creative in a way that they are comfortable with using. While we have to be careful with how the students are using technology, it is important to let them explore and innovate at their own pace as they learn and grow.
