This classroom floor plan is one that I designed for the Winter semester of 2015. It may look a little cluttered and messy, but that is because I am NOT an artist, and I decided to hand draw it. All of the messiness aside, this plan shows that I want to create a warm and welcoming learning environment that can accommodate all learning styles. I want to be able to allow students to learn in an environment that lets them explore themselves as learners and future citizens. This lesson plan may also look like a fire hazard, due to the large amounts of stuff in the room, but I will assure you, I am all about safety. The students safety in a learning environment is crucial to their development, without a feeling of safety in the classroom, learning may not effectively take place. Therefore, I designed this with that in mind, a welcoming, inclusive, diverse, and safe environment to accommodate my future students.
The classroom agreements picture is a contract that the students and I created together. I had one student record our ideas and I largely facilitated a discussion around things we should do and not do when we are in a classroom. This agreements list was created in a drama classroom, which can be a particularly vulnerable environment. I made all of the students sign the agreements before they leave class so it is a binding document for our classroom behaviour. Going forward, I would like to continue building expectations and agreements with the classes that I am teaching in order to have a more collaboratively built environment that fosters mutual respect.
I feel as though classroom management is where I have taken my greatest steps forward as an educator. Coming from almost non-existent management skills to becoming the instructional leader in all of my classes is something that I needed to work, and will continue to work on as my career progresses. There is not a lot of tangible evidence of my growth in this area, but I feel more confident in my ability to build meaningful relationships in a classroom while also delivering a lesson, and keeping a safe and controlled environment at the same time.
